The word Hermaphrodite comes from an ancient Greek legend where Hermes & Aphrodite's son was one.

In Ancient Greece 1 in 50 to 100 people were rumored to be in some way hermaphroditic. Many people have pseudohermaphroditism where the sex organs are of one sex but some external characteristics are of the other sex. So extremly feminine men or masculine women. Men who developed breasts, women who grew facial hair etc etc.

Modern medicine corrects many birth defects straight away so you see much less people with webbed feet or 6 fingers etc but birth irregularities are actually pretty common. One that is often fixed is male genitalia as well as female genatalia on babies. In general we probably aren't as aware of the likelyhood of some level of irregularity in our offspring as people were in the past.

So the legend of Hermaphroditicus was probably just the Greek way of being inclusive of those individuals in the whole of Greek Society.

A whole series of Egyptian Pharoah's were portrayed with both male and female characteristics and it should be noted that the line died out shortly after as they did not produce offspring. It's possible given the whole marrying their sister thing led to recessive genetic hermaphroditism manifested in their line and they simply became sterile hermaphrodites.

It's not unusual in artwork, and statues from the ancient world to see a mix of sexual characteristics in the same individual. Smaller populations and more inbreeding was likely to have increased the likelyhood of these birth irregularities and the same situations occured in Ancient Rome - Caligula going mad, Claudius's various defects etc were largely down to the 12 families of Roman aristocracy inbreeding for generations.

So yeah in all likelyhood ancient Romans and Greeks would have both portrayed these individuals in art including art in Brothels but may well have also had them working in them too.

Very cool to see the history. As usual there is nothing new under the sun,but what has change and changing everyday is the thoughts and ideas of what gender & sexuality is.

That's not Amanda Simpson in that shot. It's Kimberley Reed, the former Paul McKerrow.
