In my job I get to deal with a lot of crazy shit and I can assure you this isn't a sign of some sort of 'plague' or whatever. This shit happens every single day, but since that face eating thing and the romanticism of the "zombie apocalypse" idea, people are scouring the news for anything weird. Same goes for news outlets as they want to link the cases cause sensationalism sells.

Cause let's face it, under normal circumstances people don't want to hear the gruesome details of a father stamping on his baby's head repeatedly because we like to pretend that things like that don't happen.
