The point is absurdity: they are fictional characters in distinct fictional "universes" who are as powerful as the writers say they are. How do you know which one is smarter or more powerful? Even in the imaginary world of comix, they do not coexist.

Historically, Thanos is derivative of Darkseid (being created two years later and in many ways imitating Kirby's original). The infinity gems and gauntlet are tools; the comparison is between the characters, not their tools.
