puerto rican is also not an ethnicity. the commonwealth of puerto rico has a diverse ethnic and racial composition. it is only debatable as to whether or not puerto rican is even a nationality because it is a commonwealth and could soon be the 51st state. in essence if you consider puerto rican an nationality, then you must then consider new yorker different from texan as a diverse group and not "american"

Puerto Rico was a slave port in the 18th century. African slaves were brought there to farm sugar cane and coffee. Ethnically PRs are a mix of both White and Black and whatever indigenous groups there may have been before it was colonized.

I do understand the confusion however because people of color from the Caribbean are always lumped into the African American category which never takes into account their cultural individuality and only looks at their ethnicity.
