TARTAN STUDENT CAN TAKE A PORN STAR (OR TWO) OUT, BUT NOT TO PROM

Mike Stone plans to make his first prom a memorable one - with a Los Angeles porn star as his date.

Stone, of Oakdale, created Internet buzz this week after two women with triple-X websites agreed to go with him to the May 12 Tartan High School prom.

He isn't sure he can raise the money for his dates' airfare. But if even one of the women accompanies him to prom or anywhere else that evening, it will be a date to remember.

Stone, 18, doesn't expect any trouble from his parents. "My mom was a little mad, but my dad is OK with it," Stone said in a telephone interview Tuesday.

The school is another matter. The district has a policy requiring all non-Tartan guests to the prom to get approval in advance. That isn't going to happen with Stone's guests, said Patty Phillips, superintendent of the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale district.

In January, Stone realized that as a senior, the spring prom was his last chance - he had never been to one.

But he had no date. Then he remembered a 2004 movie called "The Girl Next Door," in which a teenage boy and a former porn actress fall in love.

Inspired, he spent most of January and February sending Twitter messages to about 600 celebrities, including hundreds of porn actresses.

Stone didn't woo them with soaring poetry or showers of rose petals. Typical tweets were: "hey Lyndah can u make it to my prom" and "hey nat are you booked up on may 12?"

It worked.

Last weekend, porn actress Megan Piper responded via Twitter, Stone said. She said he would need to pay for her airfare from Los Angeles.

A short time later, porn star Emy Reyes also said she would be Stone's prom date.

Stone has launched a fundraising drive. A tweet from Stone on Sunday said, "Hey everyone please help me raise to buy Emy Reyes a plane ticket so she can come to my prom on May 12."

Stone said he has no specific plans for the date. "I will take them to dinner, then the dance," he said. He plans to rent a tuxedo.

On Twitter and on several websites, many readers cheered him on as a kind of teenage folk hero.

Other postings attacked him, such as this one: "To ask a porn star (total stranger) to the prom...says to me, 1.) He thinks he's going to get lucky; and 2.) wants to impress his friends; or 3.) he can't get a school date."

TARTAN'S SENIOR'S PORN-STAR PROM DATES WIN HIM STAR STATUS - AND MONEY

The halls of Tartan High School are buzzing with one topic - Mike Stone's porn-star prom dates.

"They chanted my name in the hallways: Mike! Mike! Mike!" said Stone, the 18-year-old who earned notoriety when his quest for X-rated dates went viral.

"They called me a legend. I have never been called that before."

Officials at the Oakdale school have forbidden him to bring the women to the May 12 school prom. So Stone said he will have an alternative party, a "porn prom," at the same time as the conventional prom.

That idea seems popular with his classmates and fans across the country, who on Thursday, March 22, were showering Stone with support.

"Now, that is junior achievement," said Glen Bethel, who lives in Spooner, Wisconsin. He was planning a fundraiser for Stone, collecting money at a bar during a Thursday night football game.

"I like his initiative. If I had had something like that when I was a kid, I could have gone to a prom."

Stone, a senior, has never been on a date, much less to a prom.

In January, he knew the May prom would be his last chance. He asked several girls but struck out.

Instead of giving up, he spent two months sending hundreds of Twitter messages to Hollywood celebrities - mostly porn stars.

Last weekend, two women with triple-X websites - Megan Piper and Emy Reyes - said they would be his prom dates.

The news zipped around the Internet. Stone's parents had no idea what was happening until Tuesday, when his mother got a phone call from the school principal.

"He said, 'Do you know what Michael is doing?' " said Diven Stone. "I was really shocked."

But she now supports her son's efforts to salvage his final prom opportunity. She talked with school officials Wednesday to try to get them to change their minds. But they are sticking to their position: no porn stars at prom.

"I do not understand what their profession has to do with it," Diven Stone said. "It's not like they are going to show up naked or film a movie."

She said that, overall, the experience has been good for her son. "Last week, he had 98 friends on Facebook. Now he has 333 friends," said Stone.

He also has money.

When the women accepted his offer, they said Stone would have to pay for their airplane tickets.

Stone began a fundraiser on Twitter this week. By Thursday morning, a travel agency had agreed to pay the fares. Stone is still hoping to raise enough to take his dates to dinner and possibly rent a limo.

He said about 40 people and businesses have contacted him. He has heard from supporters in China, Japan and Brazil, he said.

One fan is Jeff Klinger of Bayport, who wants to contribute.

"I am impressed with all of the time he spent on this. He is almost like a young entrepreneur," Klinger said. "I wish I had been bright enough to think of this when I was 18."

But some Tartan parents aren't as excited.

"Aren't there better causes out there to donate to?" said Mike Conway, whose daughter Shannon told him about Stone's plans.

He supports the school's decision to ban the porn stars. "The right thing is being done," Conway said. "Otherwise, prom would be some kind of carnival. I can't see anything real good coming out of it."

Stone said that if the school rejects his prom dates, then he will reject prom - and have a competing prom of his own.

The Tartan prom will be at the Landmark Center in St. Paul, and Stone said he's planning his event at a hotel a few blocks away.

"It would be a big party just down the street. If anyone wanted to come, they would be welcome," Stone said.

Whatever happens, Stone has created a whirlwind of gossip at school - and online.

"You could not walk through the hallways without hearing about it," said Tartan senior Shannon Conway. "Kids in class were whispering about it. It was quite a comedy."

She said students had discussed starting a petition to let Stone's dates into prom.

Stone has heard from two students planning T-shirts in support of him. One would read "Porn for Prom." The other would read "Megan for Prom" on the front and "Class of 2012" on the back.

"The whole school wants this to happen," Stone said. "They think it's the best thing to ever happen at the school.

"This is the biggest thing to ever happen to me."
