An 'ethnic background' to what, exactly? If you meet someone who is a Muslim, is that their 'ethnic background'? Don't understand the concept, being Jewish, Muslim, Christian or Atheist is not ethnic, which as a word is derived from the Greek for nation -in fact there are two words I would happily abolish -Ethnic (+ ethnicity) and Race.

A claim could be made (however feeble) for ethnicity.

You're only really Jewish if your mother is Jewish (hence the revulsion towards a shiksa and no real analog for a male interloper). A lot of tribes were matrilineal but this one has outlasted them all.

An important and identifying part of our genes comes from our mother's RNA. It's the part that makes lineage traceable through centuries.

Male or female, you get your mother's X chromosome. And you get her genes, which become part of yours and get passed on whether you transmit your Y (if you're a guy).

You can convert to Judaism but it doesn't make you Jewish.

For instance Israeli jews, have Moroccan, Tunisian, Russian, Polish, decent i have even met some with Brazilian, and Chilean parents that later moved to israel in the 60's.

Then u have american Jews, who are the 2nd and 3rd generation of polish and Arab jews.

The Arab jews and Muslims have the exact same bloodline, like someone coming from "Iraq, or Tunisia" so i understand them being "Ethnic" but u cant classify Jewish as an ethnic background.
