Around the time that Serbian nationalists (with support from Greece and Israel) were trying to create a Serbian super-state, laying siege to Sarajevo, and slaughtering Bosnians, I found myself at lunch with some engineers whom I admit I did not know well. The conversation turned to the epidemic of slaughter in the Balkans -they conceded that if there were a similar melt-down in the UK the 'blacks' would be the first to go. I said nothing, I think what shocked me most was the casual offhand way that the assumption was made. When I read comments to articles in the press, notably the Telegraph, I do realise how much unexpressed -if irrational- hatred there is here, and as yet another high profile politician behaves as if 'we the people' are simply irrelevant to the enrichment of his friends, the ingredients of melt-down, led by cynicism, are there, although I dont expect it to happen. The Blacks, would, of course, be slaughtered en masse in the USA but then this is a disgusting thread that I didn't think I would contribute to, as it assumes as a given that chaos is the only consequence of economic decline, accompanied by wholesale violence, a complete rejection of Steven Pinker's thesis that, historically, human societies are less violent than ever before.
