Re: New on here today
Hmm....Bedford...is that a pun? I once made a faux pas when I met someone from Bedford and I asked, is that actually a town? I hadn't realised there was one...turns out there was a minor wave of Italian immigration there in the 1950s, mostly workers in the Bedford vans motor plant.

Re: New on here today
Hmmm. Not quite, Stavros. I live about 15 miles north and Bedford is a frequent shopping spot. The first "wave" of Italian immigration was in the 40s, when there was a large prison camp to the south of the town and the inmates were put to work in the Stewartby brickfields. Many stayed on and brought their families over, mostly from the north, and to this day there's a suburb to the west which is essentially still very Italian in flavour. If you have the right contacts it's a very good route for buying decent Tuscan wine at very low prices.
As for Bedford vans, the plant was in Luton, some 15 or so miles south of Bedford.

Re: New on here today
Thanks for the clarification, RobertLouis, I knew there was an Italian connection in that area, but not its precise locations -I might be wrong, but Italian wine doesn't travel, it always tastes better there, like most things I suppose (like the cappuccino!).

True story about the wine. I worked in Bedford for a few years, some time ago now. The FD's pa was a local girl who had married into one of the local Italian families, and she brought in some of her family's wine for us to try at a board meeting. What the community did was to buy grapes from their home area in bulk, ship them to the UK in bulk, then make the wine in Bedford.
The white was ok, if a bit thin. The red was undrinkable, so tannic that the glasses were melting.
The MD, who wasn't aware of the provenance, grimaced and asked where it came from. Sue answered timorously that it came from Bedford.
"Doesn't travel well." was all John said in reply.
