Your question and the answer are both subjective. There are two ways to discuss gender vs transsexuallity. There is the psychological aspect, which most TS believe in and stick to faithfully. Because it is safe for them. Then there is the forensic medical aspect that proves what gender a person is, no matter what they want to think. I am highly versed in both sides of those aspects from my former profession.

First, the psychological aspect of gender. Most TS have talked about themselves as children or young teens, feeling like a woman stuck in a mans body. And feeling this way through out their lives. So they decided to act on those feelings and transition to become women through hormone treatment and surgery. There are a few who do this for kicks, fetishes, or the celebrity potential. But most TS have transitioned to be what they truly believe they were meant to be. It gives them self respect and happiness to finally feel, look, and act like a woman. To BE a woman, and live out their life as a woman. They did the right thing for themselves. The nicest thing the rest of us can do is respect their new life and to recognise them as the women they have become.

So for all intent and purposes, TS are women, and deserve to be treated with the respect and kindness that any woman deserves.

Now let's look at the forensic medical side of gender. A man is a man, and a woman is a woman. What defines them as men or women? A man who transitions into a TS takes hormone treatments to change their physical attributes. They begin to have more feminine features like curves, legs, and even develop natural breast tissue. Other enhancements are from surgical treatments to look even more feminine. Breast implants, reconstructive surgery....and so on. After the treatments they can chose to have MTF surgery to reconstruct the genitals to look female, or they can chose to keep their male genitals.

Either way, the job is usually a good one by definition. They look beautiful, sexy, and can pass and live as women until they die. But if a DNA test is taken, it will still identify the TS as a male. The DNA test goes way beyond just X & Y chromosome counts. And a full medical study will show an original functional male reproductive system. This can only be found in males.

So is a TS a male or a female? The answer is subject to which side of the coin you land on. By all that is known to medicine and science, a TS is technically still a male. And from the psychological standpoint, a TS is every bit a female in her heart and mind.
