I don't really know how you mend it, but I do know that I would rather literally be stabbed in the heart than feel the pain of a broken heart. Recently went through this in pretty much the worst way I ever have, and though I do agree with Rock in that time heals all wounds, I think that emotional residue (good word!) will always be there.
