In terms of equitable treatment Kelly, absolutely. In terms of actual savings, not much. The effect would be symbolic.

If you really want to make spending cuts and improve your country's chances of sustained economic recovery, start with the bankers. Those bastards remain immune to the shitstorm that the rest of us are suffering from, and they continue to make ever larger and more obscene bonuses.

When are governments - and it has to be done collectively by treaty - going to tackle the architects of the financial disaster?

What are you suggesting for teachers?

EX-Presidents should not be getting paid. They're already rich.

You've got a total of four living ex-presidents.

Where are the rest of the savings coming from?

And if you're going for former office-holders "because they're already rich", why the fuck aren't you going after tax-dodging corporations and executives. There are a lot more of them than there are ex-presidents. *SMH*

Oh yeah, the teabaggers, bankrolled by the Koch brothers, two of the richest men in America, stopped congress from taking that very sensible step. *SMH again and again*

The Bush Tax Cuts were horrendous - and of course the Republicans now are trying to twist it and blame it on Obama.

One thing I can say for the Republicans they are good at twisting and turning crap into gold.

I wish the democrats would figure out how to sweet talk more and put their issues out there more.

I'm not saying to ignore the tax dodging corporations and executives. I'm saying it is still wasteful to pay four ex-presidents.

We do NOT need to cut teacher's salaries. The average teacher is barely making it on a $40,000 budget. Some of their budget is used for their jobs. I work on a campus. Some teachers have to spend $5000 on their job alone. Teachers should be paid more because their jobs are more important than most jobs in the US. They train the future of this nation. Fuck them over and the education system will take another blow.

Couldn't agree more, Kelly. It just frustrates me that when there's a clear and simple basis for mounting an investment-led recovery, your nation's congress completely fouled it up by putting partisan dogma and short-term political advantage before the nation's needs.

As long as the Republicans think that screwing Obama is more important than doing what's best for the country as a whole you won't progress or recover.

I posted this as a note on my Facebook page...it's about Congress...
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Someone posted this on Yahoo in reply to a story. Frankly it's a damn good idea...

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it.
That was in 1971...before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure.

I'm asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

    Congressional Reform Act of 2011

    1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in
office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

    2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All
funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

    3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

    4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

    5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

    6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

    7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen.
Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress
is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

    8. Any congressman resigning due to unlawful acts receives NO benefits.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people, it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Maybe it is time.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS !

William Escalade is no more. He's done his service to the site.
