As a Scot, I'm able to stand aside from the England manager thing to an extent, but as a long term resident, I despair almost as much. I've even got to the point of actually wanting them to do well in tournaments, but as far as the Euros are concerned, I'll be supporting Ireland - consistency, stability, and an experienced manager who knows how to get the very best from modest resources....

Actually, Hodgson's credentials as an international manager with Switzerland are impeccable. He took a team of journeymen further in the World Cup than they had been for more than thirty years. I think the issue would be that neither the English media nor the fans (nor most of the players, if it comes to that), can get it into their heads that they are perpetual underachievers in major tournaments and are not the potential world dominators they like to see themselves as.

So I may be in a minority of one, but I think that Hodgson is a viable candidate. Unfortunately the Sun et all will have him in the guise of a vegetable before a ball is kicked. He can't win.
