Fascinating stuff Heather.... and I certainly had NO idea about the transgendered tradition in Arabia. Presumably under Islam this was swept away - or at least under the carpet - after the Hejira?. There is of course quite a thirst for transgendered girls across the Middle East today. But punishments for it can also be pretty heinous.
