    Default Rory McIlroy

How many superlatives does this young man from Northern Ireland deserve?

After his final day implosion at the Masters, he wins the US Open by 8 strokes and becomes the youngest winner of the tournament since 1923.

Well done, and on to the British Open.

He has much to prove, but certainly a bright outlook.

Yep, and he's from Norn Irn as well. Still, great to see Darren Clarke win the Open. One of the nicest guys in sport and he's been through a hell of a lot in the last five years. A proper heartwarming story. Awww.

The theory is that McIlroy splitting with his girlfriend just before the tournament was a distraction and he couldn't concentrate on his game. Sports psychology often links sudden drops in form to personal issues -darts players who can't let go of the dart, footballer's who can't score in front of goal, snooker players who keep missing shots they would normally score etc. There are any number of causes: issues with parents, wives/husbands/girlfriends, some trauma sparking off self-doubt. Without personal details, its hard to be absolutely sure.
