I have worked in the community and I see the gangster image as just a way for poor young men to potray manly values, strong and independent. It is exactly the same thing as in the fifties when cowboys movies were so popular. While the men were being urbanized and suburbanized, they were imaging themselve riding the range dispensing justice with a gun. That is why I call today's gangsters "the new cowboys".

Our ghetto culture youth are caught up in a trap, thinking gangter images are real men, in real life. In reality they are only fodder to be used in the world's largest prison population, right here in "the land of free". They are the new sub-class, never gaining the rights of ordinary citizens (non-felons).

'Real men' are strong and brave like the images the gangsters portray, but there are more important keys in today's world. These keys are things like being a provider (holding a legitimate job), and owning land or other properties. A real man is a builder. But women, and even 'our' girls, are often attracted to the warrior type. Their is a primeval urge in them that sees the warrior as their protector, but the builders are actually the more important protectors in the long run.

As a middle aged black man, I have seen how the "gangsta" image has been manufactured by the music business and the fashion industry and mindlessly adopted by young black males.

Go back 15 to 20 years and listen to hip hop music that was produced by people like KRS-1 and Public Enemy. Then follow how this cultural movement was carefully coopted by music companies, movie companies, BET, MTV, fashion companies, and the content was replaced with "gangster rap" in order to sell garbage (garbage music, garbage movies, garbage malt liquor and garbage clothes) and replace the message of old school with a self-destructive culture.

It's sad that you have bought into your own minstrelization for profit.

well...personally, i am NO thug, i run away from danger, try to avoid fights at all costs and other than smoke weed i never commit any crimes at all, nor do i plan to...but...i find the thug look to be so god damn sexy, that show The Wire turns me on soooo god damn much, and because of that i sometimes dress like that stereotypical thug look also, beanie over the eyes, tight white wifebeater, loose jeans, not really to look like a bad ass but to attract other guys and girls. I reserve judgement. I have never seen anyone who considered themselves a thug in real life. Sometimes when I'm hanging out with my friends we say "Hey? You wanna thug it for a while?" and its a loose street term, we don't consider ourselves thugs at all. Like I said I've never seen a thug in my life, I live very close to the murder capital of the world Oakland, and its little brothers San Fran and Richmond. In all my time wandering the streets I've never seen a thug. I've seen people gashed to ribbons, I've experienced multiple drive-by shootings, I've been attacked and fought offensively and defensively, I've been cut, I've been beaten and kicked. Never once did I stop and think, "I'm getting assaulted by thugz." The only reason there is for anyone who isn't african-amercian to be walking those streets is to buy junk or crack. Thugs don't live there, gangsters maybe, but it makes no difference when you're running for your life or trying to defend yourself, adrenaline blazing. If someone calls themselves a thug, a gangster or an OG it means they're cool with you and they're joking around. Bullets don't talk and don't leave you enough time to ask your assailant for credencials. Until you've seen someone lying in a pool of their own blood you haven't experienced violence.
