Stoat by the look of it (with its winter clobber on).

Ferret or mink, maybe. Yah, they can be pets, but need a lot of attention. Speaking from experience with ferrets, they are much like rubbery cats. They grok the litter box so they are OK to keep inside and loose, but they are a relative of the skunk so can get a bit of an aroma to them. Even after the scent glands are removed they can be pretty musky.

Most are friendly and affectionate. I carried a ferret around in my pocket for a day as a sitter. Every so often, he'd poke his head out to see what was up, then he'd go back to sleep.

So, yah, there is precedent to the phrase "Is that a ferret in your pocket?".

It's an ermine. Same as a stoat. Stoat has brown fur. It changes to white in winter, & they're called ermines. A weasel by any other name... Will still kill your cat & chew your toes off in the middle of the night if you take them home. Of course their fur is only white if it's too cold for you to be comfortable.
