Do you even know the history behind it? In medieval times, the Church would not allow Christians to lend money with interest. Thus, the economy stagnated. Imagine not being able to borrow for a home or car today because the lender will be losing money (Time Value of Money, look it up). There would be no home sales/car sales, except to the very rich with ready cash.

Guess what? The Jews had no such restrictions. Thus, they could lend you money to start up your pie shop/blacksmith shop/etc. However, once you fell behind on your payments, they came to collect (just as banks would do today, by suing/foreclosing/reposessing). Some Christians cried foul (and had Jews imprisoned, claimed usury in Court, etc.) and claimed the Jews were cheap/greedy, when in reality, the governments pretty much prevented Jews from doing any other kind of work. Thus, the urban Jews' livelihood was based on this money-lending. If a payment was missed the Jew's family wouldn't eat. Now, is that being greedy/cheap?
