Work the MAC cosmetics counter at Nordstom's/Saks etc. I see trans or close to it working there quite a bit. One keeps giving me the eye lol.

It is not always discrimination that keeps TGs out of respectable careers.

If an individual sabotages herself by behaving badly, prostituting (either on the backstreets or the cyberstreets) might feel like the easier choice.

However, most TGs are not sex workers.

Cosmetology and hair cutting are popular choices. For many of these businesses I would think having a Tgirl on you staff would be a nice bonus.

The problem with "getting tired with sex working" is that there is a feedback loop here. The longer someone does it, the harder it will be to find mainstream employment.

Say a girl does this until people are no longer interested in her (because she's gotten old or let herself go or something like that). Try finding work with no work history, education, training, employment skills, etc etc. An employer sees someone in their 50s with nothing whatsoever in their history to claim as applicable experience is not going to be an appealing candidate... even less so if the applicant is already out as trans (i.e. unpassable, unmatching paperwork, whatever)... or worse, outted as being a former prostitute.

Its also hard for GG's to enter the workforce after decades of not "doing anything important." I.e., mothers who become stay-at-home housewives. The stats on the current economic disaster show that older women are disproportionately having a harder time with layoffs, finding new jobs etc- thats all because someone with a ~20+ year gap in their history like that is far less valuable, especially if they're going for a job where they're easily considered expendable.

repost on my thoughts on the matter from the Transfriendly Job
Listings thread, which I will start updating again.

This thread made me think of a few things, that have kept me in
good stead in my years in the workplace. I hope some of it will be
useful to someone.

Things a person can do to stay off the radar in the first place:

1. Have your paperwork in order, if all your documents are gender
and name congruent, if you are "who you are supposed to be", that
can keep your name out of peoples mouths.

2. The harsh reality is the better a person can "pass" the more people
will leave you alone. I fully realize that’s unfair and cruel, but it is
factual. Whatever you can do to help that process, do so. Also if a girl
wears provocative clothing, she should try to leave the "hoochie" look
till Friday, and try to wear what women her age in that company wear.

If you need "work- cosmetic procedures", start saving your money
and on a long holiday, get it done. But, don't leave work on Friday
a 36A, and come back Monday a 40DD, if you must do that, try it
in winter, and then keep the “girls” under a bulky sweater.

3. Don't confide your situation to the first person, or any person who
befriends you, unless there is a very compelling reason to so.

4. KNOW YOUR JOB, DO YOUR JOB. "The business of America,"
President Calvin Coolidge said in 1925, "is business." Companies are in
business to make money, if you are helping them do that, then you are
cool with them. If you have a million doctors appointments, or your
"mones" are giving you mood swings, you will need to "twerk" it out.

Along those lines if you have a less than stellar history, firm it up, no
you won't be making $300 per hour but a prospective employer needs
to see some sort of work history. As regards legal mattters, request
your records so that you will know what an employer will see when they
look at your records, and you may want to look into having them sealed.

5. Finally, “DON’T fuck the help”. Yeah, I know Ray-Ray, down on the
loading docks is “fine”. And he is always taking his shirt off, and his
muscles gleam from sweat when he’s working. But when something
goes wrong in your relationship, he will put your business on “Front
Street”.

I'm not saying discrimination doesn't happen, it does... a lot. But there's something to be said for simply keeping things under wraps. I've worked at my job for a year and a half and nobody knows that I can tell. It's not like someone is going to one day be like "You're actually a guy!" even if perhaps they may think you're kind of strange. But everybody at my job is kind of strange in a way.

But I always seem to come back from the weekend with some crazy stories to tell I think new information regarding my genitalia would just be the icing on the cake as far as their idea of my sexual craziness.

But I've just gone with the "don't act like it isn't normal" thing for a long time. I did that when I went to college and just checked the "Female" box and didn't open my mouth about the situation to anyone. I ended up with some awesome roommates who probably wouldn't have freaked out if they did find out but I just kept it under wraps.

More than sex work, I think most tgirls have computer skills. I've met so many geeky tgirls and that goes for the older ones as well. But there are also girls who combine the two skills and run their own websites. Everybody makes a living.

Just stay away from the drugs and heavy drinking and have other serious interests that don't involve sexuality (men) or trans stuff.
