IDK what various surgeons use in terms of material or how they fix the "patch" to the body but Suporn uses titanium plate with screws.

is there a way to tell if the sinuses will be exposed BEFORE the surg?

It all depends on how thick your skull is where they're grinding, and how much they have to take off for it to look right.
Some people need that much removed entirely, just to get their massive brows ground away.

Basically, that plate is there to protect your brains. If you got into a head on collision without one, you'd be in trouble.
