Best line to use when approaching an escort?

The reason I ask is that yesterday, midday, I was waiting for a left turn light on a busy arterial street when I spied a woman on a corner in a sun dress that had just enough oomph to it to make me wonder. No hooker heels, by the way. As she crossed the street in front of me and then turned to walk south along the route I came from, I noticed that her walk was just a tad bit slow and she was talking on a cellphone.

That was sort of the clincher. So after taking the left, I circled back around, parked the car on a side street, and started walking towards her on the sidewalk. All the while I was wondering what to say to her, since it wasn't an obvious time to be hooking on the street.

I could think of phrases not to use, like: "Are you a prostitute?", "How much?", etc.

I thought of the times I've been approached on the street. The girl usually uses some variation of... "Hey baby, would you like a date?"

But since I was heading to a friend's house, I wasn't actually in date mode. I just wanted her number.

She was still on the phone, so I made eye contact and said "hi", and then stopped. She told the person on the phone to hold on.

Then I went with.. "Hi, are you by chance a working girl?" Fully prepared to get slapped.

She sort of barely audibly said yes.

Then I asked her for her number and she brightened. After writing the number down for me, with her name, and the obligatory heart shape, she mentioned that she liked how I framed the question.

So I guess my approach wasn't bad.
