Default Spying charges against former A.I.P.A.C. officials dropped.

U.S. Might Not Try Pro-Israel Lobbyists
    The Washington Post
    Wednesday, April 22, 2009

"Transcripts of the FBI wiretaps depict a possible trade of favors in which Harman expressed willingness to discuss the American Israel Public Affairs Committee prosecution with senior administration officials and, in return, backers of Israel would provide Democrats with additional campaign contributions and support Harman's efforts to become chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity."
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...042102602.html

    CASE DROPPED.

"Why charges against Rosen and Weissman were dismissed, considering that one of their co-defendants, ex-Pentagon employee Larry Franklin, got 12 years after pleading guilty in the same affair, remains something of a mystery. Perhaps President Obama felt uncomfortable sending VP Biden to AIPAC‘s annual meeting in May while two ex-AIPAC employees were under indictment for spying. Or perhaps California Congresswoman Jane “this conversation doesn’t exist” Harman, caught on tape promising an Israeli agent to do her best to get the charges against Rosen and Weissman dismissed, got her message to the right person."

Larry Franklin worked for Douglas Feith, the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (2001-05):

"Pentagon statement: Franklin did not influence policy
According to a Pentagon statement, "the investigation involves a single individual at D.O.D. at the desk officer level, who was not in a position to have significant influence over U.S. policy." However, this characterization ignores evidence that while at the Office of Special Plans, Douglas Feith used Larry Franklin for sensitive projects involving foreign citizen contacts, overseas[5]."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_W...fluence_policy

"In 1998, Feith was one of a number of U.S. officials who signed an open letter to President Bill Clinton calling for the United States to oust Saddam Hussein. Feith was part of a group of former national security officials in the 1990s who supported Ahmad Chalabi and the Iraqi National Congress and encouraged the U.S. Congress to pass the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998. Congress approved the Act, and Clinton signed it into law.

Feith generally favors US support for Israel and has promoted US-Israeli cooperation. He was a member of the study group which authored a controversial report entitled A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm,[13] a set of policy recommendations for the newly elected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The report was published by the Institute for Advanced Strategic and Political Studies without an individual author being named. According to the report, Feith was one of the people who participated in roundtable discussions that produced ideas that the report reflects. Feith pointed out in a September 16, 2004 letter to the editor of the Washington Post that he was not the co-author and did not clear the report's final text. He wrote, "There is no warrant for attributing any particular idea [in the report], let alone all of them, to any one participant."

Feith also served on the board of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), a think tank that promotes a military and strategic alliance between the United States and Israel.[14]

Feith was one of 18 founding members of the organization One Jerusalem to oppose the Oslo peace agreement. Its purpose is "saving a united Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel." He is also Director of Foundation for Jewish Studies, which "offers in-depth study programs for the adult Washington Jewish community that cross denominational lines."

Feith and Franklin worked in the "Office of Special Plans", which was setup by fellow dual citizen Israeli, Paul Wolfowitz. Feith resigned in 2005 after the F.B.I. raided A.I.P.A.C.'s offices.

The spies who pushed for war (Guardian, 2003)

"The OSP was an open and largely unfiltered conduit to the White House not only for the Iraqi opposition. It also forged close ties to a parallel, ad hoc intelligence operation inside Ariel Sharon's office in Israel specifically to bypass Mossad and provide the Bush administration with more alarmist reports on Saddam's Iraq than Mossad was prepared to authorise.

"None of the Israelis who came were cleared into the Pentagon through normal channels," said one source familiar with the visits. Instead, they were waved in on Mr Feith's authority without having to fill in the usual forms.

The exchange of information continued a long-standing relationship Mr Feith and other Washington neo-conservatives had with Israel's Likud party.

In 1996, he and Richard Perle - now an influential Pentagon figure - served as advisers to the then Likud leader, Binyamin Netanyahu. In a policy paper they wrote, entitled A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm, the two advisers said that Saddam would have to be destroyed, and Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Iran would have to be overthrown or destabilised, for Israel to be truly safe.

The Israeli influence was revealed most clearly by a story floated by unnamed senior US officials in the American press, suggesting the reason that no banned weapons had been found in Iraq was that they had been smuggled into Syria. Intelligence sources say that the story came from the office of the Israeli prime minister."

Prewar Intelligence Unit at Pentagon Is Criticized (New York Times, 2007)

"Senator Levin, who is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the report a “very strong condemnation” of the Pentagon’s activities.

“I think they sought this kind of intelligence. They made it clear they wanted any kind of possible connections, no matter how skimpy, and they got it,” he said."

All very interesting and totally new to me.

This is the kind of duplicity that causes consternation around the world.

Couple of points I noted on the links you provided were that the initial 12 years custodial sentence impossed on Franklyn was reduced to 10 months home detential on appeal. It's not clear why this massive reduction in sentencing occurred.

Also, the Rosen/Weissman trial judge said prosecutors must show that the two men knew that the information they allegedly disclosed would harm the United States or aid a foreign government and that they knew what they were doing was illegal.

So much for ignorance of the law being no excuse.

Oh, there is much more... unfortunately.

Feith sent Franklin (the A.I.P.A.C. spy) to Rome along with fellow Neo-Con and O.S.P. employee, Harold Rhode, to collect what is now called the "Niger Forgeries". Forgeries, because that's exactly what they were... fake. This was the supposed evidence which linked Saddam to nuclear weapons. Remember the 45 minute claim from the "dodgy dossier"?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_Dossier

"Weeks later, in December, a plane carrying Ledeen traveled to Rome with two other members of Feith's secret Pentagon unit: Larry Franklin and Harold Rhode, a protégé of Ledeen who has been called the "theoretician of the neocon movement." A specialist on Islam who speaks Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish and Farsi, Rhode had experience with shady exiles like Ghorbanifar: He was close to Ahmed Chalabi, the Iraqi dissident whose discredited intelligence helped drive the Bush administration to invade Baghdad. According to UPI, Rhode himself was later observed by CIA operatives passing "mind-boggling" intelligence to Israel, including sensitive information about U.S. military deployments in Iraq."
    http://www.rollingstone.com/politics...the_next_war/3

Just like many on the 9/11 commission, Michael Ledeen, was also involved with the Iran-Contra affair. He helped set the up the deal. Nice pedigree, huh? He was also a member of the right-wing think-tank, the "American Enterprise Institute", for 20 years. This was P.N.A.C.'s parent group.

    http://www.rightweb.irc-online.org/p...erican_Century

"According to insiders, Rhode worked with Feith to purge career Defense officials who weren't sufficiently enthusiastic about the muscular anti-Iraq crusade that Wolfowitz and Feith wanted. Rhode appeared to be "pulling people out of nooks and crannies of the Defense Intelligence Agency and other places to replace us with," says a former analyst. "They wanted nothing to do with the professional staff. And they wanted us the fuck out of there."

The unofficial, off-site recruitment office for Feith and Rhode was the American Enterprise Institute, a right-wing think tank whose 12th-floor conference room in Washington is named for the dean of neoconservative defense strategists, the late Albert Wohlstetter, an influential RAND analyst and University of Chicago mathematician. Headquartered at AEI is Richard Perle, Wohlstetter's prize protege, the godfather of the AEI-Defense Department nexus of neoconservatives who was chairman of the Pentagon's influential Defense Policy Board. Rhode, along with Michael Rubin, a former AEI staffer who is also now at the Pentagon, was a ubiquitous presence at AEI conferences on Iraq over the past two years, and the two Pentagon officials seemed almost to be serving as stage managers for the AEI events, often sitting in the front row and speaking in stage whispers to panelists and AEI officials. Just after September 11, 2001, Feith and Rhode recruited David Wurmser, the director of Middle East studies for AEI, to serve as a Pentagon consultant."

So, the C.I.A. had to investigate the Niger documents. The Neo-Con cabal had specifically set up their "Office of Special Plans" to deliberately damage the C.I.A.'s ability to prevent their desired war against Iraq. To further muddy the waters they blew the cover of Valerie Plame. This further damaged the C.I.A. as Plame was involved in gathering intel on the next Neo-Con target, Iran.

""One former CIA official with extensive experience in the Middle East says, they've taken the OSP and made them the Iran desk," (National Public Radio, September 20, 2006)."
    http://www.rightweb.irc-online.org/b...Special_Plans/

This is one scenario as to what went on in the Whitehouse regarding the Plame Affair:
"No great extrapolation is necessary to assume that OSP, sitting inside the CIA, got early word that Joseph Wilson was being dispatched to Niger to investigate the sale of low-grade uranium to Iraq. Rhode needed only to pick up the phone and call the vice president’s chief of staff Scooter Libby, who would tell his boss and Karl Rove. How hard is it for even Republicans to believe, at this point, that Rove is capable of launching a plan to discredit Wilson and punish him by exposing his wife? Rove and his boss were not simply in danger of losing the prime cause for the war; they faced an even graver political wound of being discovered as covert agents who defrauded the government and the public."

"Prove to us we still live in a democracy and a nation of laws."
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jim-mo...in_b_9183.html

The finger of blame for this has always been pointed at Dick Cheney, but it was Lewis Libby who took the fall. Both Cheney and Libby were members of P.N.A.C.. Libby was the lawyer for MOSSAD bankroller and fellow dual citizen Israeli, Marc Rich. It was actually Libby who wrote the first draft of Colin Powell's speech to the U.N. on Iraq's "Weapons of Mass Destruction". The Neo-Cons truly shafted Powell.

Libby's Drafts of Powell's UN Speech Could Be `Smoking Gun' To Impeach Cheney

"A lawyer by training, arguably Libby's most famous client, whom he represented from the mid-1980s to 2000, was Marc Rich, the billionaire financier convicted on racketeering and tax fraud charges who was pardoned by President Bill Clinton (CNN, March 2, 2001)."

The real reason Bill Clinton pardoned Marc Rich
"Even now, the true machinations behind the Rich pardon cannot be discussed honestly -- perhaps because they implicate the government and the security services of the state of Israel."

Well, no one seems interested so this may as well be my last post on this. Pity, had a few more FACTS to mention. Awww...

The next "special plan" of the "Office of Special Plans" (most people couldn't make this shit up, but they did ) was to link Saddam directly to Al-Qaeda. From Newsweek (2006):

9/11: A Special White House Slide Show

"NEWSWEEK has obtained declassified copies of slides made for the briefing. There are three sets: a version for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, one for the then CIA Director George Tenet and one shown at a White House session attended by the then deputy national-security adviser Stephen Hadley and Lewis (Scooter) Libby, Cheney's chief of staff at the time. The White House materials include a slide, not part of the other briefings, devoted to the alleged Atta meeting. (Rumsfeld and Tenet were told there was "one indication of Iraqi involvement with Al Qaeda specifically related to 9/11.") The White House slide, dated September 2002, cites publicized allegations from a post-9/11 Czech intel report that Atta met the April before 9/11 with Iraqi spy Ahmed al-Ani, and asserts the United States had "no other" intel contradicting the report. The slide offers purported details about Atta's activities in Prague (including two earlier, confirmed visits). It says that during one visit al-Ani ordered an Iraqi intelligence officer to "issue funds to Atta." The slide also includes previous unpublished allegations that Atta met the Iraqi Embassy charge d'affaires and that "several workers at Prague airport identified Atta following 9/11 and remember him traveling with his brother Farhan Atta.""

    The new Pentagon papers
A high-ranking military officer reveals how Defense Department extremists suppressed information and twisted the truth to drive the country to war.

    http://dir.salon.com/story/opinion/f...osp/index.html

So, Douglas Feith, the dual citizen Israeli who directly employed A.I.P.A.C. spies, was keeping different "sets of books" to show to different people. The Atta meeting was apparently witnessed by the same Israeli intelligence who had unrestricted access to Feith.

It's not that no-one's interested, it's just that little can be done.

Massive corruption, self-interest, obsessive adherence to Israeli, corrupt legal proceedings and abuse of power have been endemic through various administrations. Some might argue, indeed do argue, that it's necessary to lubricate the wheels of administration. The key rule is "don't get caught", but if you do then there's literally a "get out of jail free card" awaiting.

Hopefully the Obama administration will bring winds of change to remove such corruption. Yeah...right.

Rogers - what got you so into Israel issues? Its not very often that people have these options against israel, which I agree with, but most people don't know the truth. Its sad really.

When did you start learning about this issue?

Don't you just love the scales of justice?
