While I do believeHIV/ Aids is a very real terrible disease, One wonders how urgently big medical corporations want to find a cure when they are making massive amounts of money selling drugs that slow down the rate of the disease .

I also would like more research done into how much lifestyle affects this, such as using recreational drugs. promiscous sexual behaviour particularly in the homosexual community where I have heard certain groups have increased chance of not only transmission but increased progression even while medicated. even simple things like diet. Because I suspect there might be some unwelcome un PC home truths told.

Another interesting avenue to go down was the theory I heard about some people having an immunity in terms of getting a postitive test result then being tested later and the test being normal. I believe there has been several cases. And some scientists have mooted not perhaps some europeans have an genetic immunity. I have heard research has also been done to use bone marrow transplants and a form of chemotherapy to destroy the disease how effective I don't know.

They fund frontline research to attempt to find a cure, but until one is found they cannot develop a mass-scale application, test it, or market it. If and when one is found they will rush to market it.

They are not doing this out of the generosity of their hearts, but for good business reasons. You may not realise that the patent life of a drug is limited. In Europe, this is to 10 years, extendable to a MAXIMUM of 15, from the date the patent is registered, typically several years before the drug hits market. (In the US the period, after extension, is I think 20 years.)

That means that AT MAXIMUM 20 years after a drug has been patented, ANYONE can make it. So big pharma is under huge pressure to come up with new treatments and cures all the time, not suppress them. Most senior executives I have discussed this with say that in fact big pharma has a window of 8-10 years max to recoup all development, testing, marketing and production costs and make a profit on any new drug; you also have to remember they spend huge amounts on many treatments that fail to get to market as well, which is a cost that has to be borne by successful products.

Developing and testing any pharma product has to be done, rightly, to incredibly rigorous standards, set by government agencies, such as the FSA, EMEA, FDA, etc. for EACH territory. This takes time and is mind-numbingly expensive. And designing, developing and installing the plant required to make mass-scale quantities of any drug is another huge expense--and it ALL has to be recouped within that 10-year window, which is why cutting-edge drugs are expensive.

HOWEVER, once all the development, testing, approvals, plant installation etc is done, the actual PRODUCTION of a drug is very cheap-- we are talking tiny quantities, measured in milligrammes or even microgrammes per dose.

This means that pharma companies are keen to sell AS MUCH of a drug as they can--and the more they sell the cheaper it will be per dose. A drug that sells, say 10 million doses per annum will be much cheaper per dose than one that sells 10 thousand doses.

An AIDS cure--or even better, an AIDS vaccine--would sell in total buckets, and big pharma knows this. The potential profits are enormous. And the anti-AIDS drugs we have now will soon either be out of patent or are already being made without licence.

Don't kid yourself--the reason there is no cure on the market, or on the way, is because there IS NO CURE. HIV is a virus and we have very, very limited success in curing viruses.

As to immunity occurring in some individuals, I would expect this; Darwin predicted it. However, discovering who they are and how that is actually working, and then developing a treatment from that knowledge, is quite another story, especially in the case of HIV, which specifically targets the immunological system.
