AVG is pretty cool and it´s free. Antivir is another option but doesn´t work that great. Kaspersky is also great.

    P.S.: always use Firefox.

Flabbybody, go to download.com and get Malware Bytes Malware remover. It is a very small program but it will remove those programs which look like real software.

I know it costs money, but I'd recommend Norton Internet Security 2007 - not newer versions since they have a lot more overhead and tend to slow things down - the 2007 version has a lot of useful protection features, can be configured for advanced or novice users, and just tends to work pretty well and protect pretty well - and there are ways to extend the updates for about 11 years (vs. the 1 year you get when you install it)

I'd recommend against Zonealarm. It's a resource hog.

As far as what I would recommend, I have yet to find one that's perfect.

However if you would like, AVG is pretty good for free AV software, you
    can grab it here http://free.avg.com/

    Avast is also good http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

For your spyware issues Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2

    Here's a free firewall http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en...e-firewall.htm

If you're gonna stick your browser in unsafe portals, make sure you use
    protection, boo.
What she said. Also be updated..

limit your computer use to USER never and Administrator.

Better than any virus protection, IMO. Especially on a slow computer where you don't want it to be any slower.
