I think that the response should be commensurate with the comment made to the star in question. For instance, if I were to rave on and on about someone, where I point out specific instances etc. I would appreciate a little more than the token "you're so sweet, luv ya XXX" mess. Alternately, if someone simply tells you that they think you're fantastic and that's it, I think a short response is perfectly acceptable.

Time constraints notwithstanding, I'd appreciate it when someone responds in kind or at least mentions that they may make a greater effort to respond adequately later (and then follow through, lol)

I agree with Nooksack, basically. One thing I've noticed here is sometimes girls with skip over a guy's compliments and acknowledge another girl's. Understandable since guys here are a dime a dozen, but I wonder if it makes that guy feel invisible to some degree.
