No more than 3-4 blocks. I would concetrate my search at Rua Major Sertório, from Rua Amaral Gurgel to Rua Rego Freitas, in the corner of Elenice Bar (sounds like Heleneecy), a famous t-girls spot for streetwalking.

Then, at Elenice take the right, at rua Rego Freitas, to the next corner. They are all there.

You may walk around at night, as the place is full of night clubs. Just be careful not to carry all your money with you. With some 200-300 reais you shall have a hell of a night.

But please, do not dress like the usual American tourist (flower shirt, and so on). A Jeans and t-shirt and you´ll look like any regular Brazilian.

My favorite spot is at Elenice. Go there, have a beer or 2 and the T-girls keep coming in up to 3:00 AM.

Cabs are quite easy to find to the way back to your hotel.

You´ll find many t-girls that do not streetwalk, and for many reasons:

some feel embarassed, as you said;

others started their professional life streetwalking and for some reason became stars (movies, comments on Brazilian boards like HA or blogs) and stop going to the streets.

some others come to São Paulo with quite a reputation, due to boards and blogs and prefer to escort in flats.

You´ll find quite many t-girls receiving in their private flats, but sometimes they show up at the Jockey Club Avenue with their cars and stand there in a sort of "car street walking".

Many do not need to street walk anymore, as they grew such a reputation that street walking would put down the fares tehy regularly charge in private flats.

One cannot say there is one single reason, or just embarassement to not going to the streets.

try to pick up the dressed ones they are more trustfull!

I am going back to Sampa soon and will make my contribution to the T-economy.
Elenice is a good spot to have a beer and check out the scene. Even if you don't speak Portugese the bar staff know why you are there and are cool.

It is very hit or miss but when you strike gold its great and when you strike out it hasn't really cost you anything. Take the time to figure out the attitude of the girl, that will determine how everything goes.

If you speak spanish you will be able to negotiate fine.
