'Satirical' New Yorker cover sparks anger

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama's campaign says a satirical New Yorker magazine cover showing the Democratic presidential candidate dressed as a Muslim and his wife as a terrorist is “tasteless and offensive.”
The illustration on the issue that hits newsstands Monday, titled “The Politics of Fear” and drawn by Barry Blitt, depicts Barack Obama wearing traditional Muslim garb – sandals, robe and turban – and his wife, Michelle – dressed in camouflage, combat boots and an assault rifle strapped over her shoulder – standing in the Oval Office.
The couple is doing a fist tap in front of a fireplace in which an U.S. flag is burning. Over the mantle hangs a portrait of Osama bin Laden.
“The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create,” Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said. “But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree.”
A spokeswoman for The New Yorker did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press.
The magazine's editor, David Remnick, said in a statement to the Daily News in New York that he was surprised by the reaction.
The cover “combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them (the images) for the obvious distortions they are,” he said.
“Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to the absurd,” Mr. Remnick said.
Republican John McCain's campaign spokesman, Tucker Bonds, agreed that the cover was “tasteless and offensive.”
Already the cover was generating controversy on the Internet.
The Huffington Post, a left-leaning blog, said: “Anyone who's tried to paint Obama as a Muslim, anyone who's tried to portray Michelle as angry or a secret revolutionary out to get Whitey, anyone who has questioned their patriotism – well, here's your image.”

Satire always cuts both ways. My grandfather tells me that in the 60's both liberals and conservatives loved the character of Archie Bunker in the TV show "All In The Family" I'm sure most people have seen a few reruns of it on the the oldies channels. Liberals found Archie to be the laughable stereotype of the dim, backward looking, platitude spouting conservative. But conservatives actually identified with him and repeated his laugh lines as if they were real arguments!
I love the New Yorker cover. I think it's a gas. But I predict it will be twice as popular with republicans as with the democrats...it speaks to their fantasies.

By the way: All in the Family didn't air until 1971. A lot of things attributed to the '60s actually happened in the '70s.
As for the New Yorker cover: I thought it was funny & tacky at the same time.

At least I didn't say gramps was a spring chicken when he watched it. My parents probably watched it too...they just never felt the need to remark on it. I suppose they were movin' on up.

Funny and tacky at the same time. That sounds about right.
Like one commentator said on the radio the problem is that many people will not see the inside of the New Yorker ever in their lives ( Remember the old commercials for that salsa "this stuff's made in New York City! New York City? Get a rope."). Those people will see it and think "Hey Maude this New York magazine confirmed that Obama's a Muslim!"
Think I'm kidding. 11% of Americans still think he is a crypto Muslim. Which I doubt. All of the daily rituals a true believer has to do at certain times every single day would be a dead give away. Plus all the controversy's with Christian preachers. Never the less this will only re enforce a bad stereotype of Muslims as having secret terrorist sympathies. Aside from what it says about Obama.

Heh heh, I wouldn't mind jabbing Mrs Obama with my fist, if y'know what I mean?
I mean I would like to have sex with her. With my penis.
