As far as the earlier question, although I'm not qualified to make a judgment on it myself, I have now read the arguments from people who are. I would agree: Yes, that would be immoral for several reasons.

The Spanish film director Luis Bunuel once had a production assistant throw a goat off the side of a mountain in one of his earlier movies. It was a scene that got a great deal of attention, but then the director had to live the rest of his life knowing that he was responsible for something dying for no legitimate reason.

The goat would have died eventually anyways, of course, but Bunuel made the choice to have it killed himself. That was wrong.
