The tax cuts (for the wealthy) were proposed by the Bush during his very first presidential campaign. The Clinton administration left us budget surplus. Almost every economist and financial expert (both conservative and liberal) projected it was a ten year surplus. Gore promised that the government will no longer raid the enormous contributions baby boomers have been making over the decades to social security and put the surplus in a "lock box" to insure it would be there when all those people (who have been paying in for years and years) retire (which is about now). Bush never gave social security a moments thought. Nor did he consider the tremendous flow of money paid in over the years by baby boomers for social security. Bush thought the surplus was due entirely to the tax contributions of the wealthy. It had to be given back...in the form of tax breaks. His legislation was designed to use up the surplus. In the future when the money was returned, the tax "relief" bill would expire. Well guess what. The wealthy have been paid back. They're swimming in luxuries even they couldn't imagine and the middle class is disappearing. While we were paying them back we were spending billions of dollars a month on the quagmire in Iraq. We still are. It's time to let "tax relief" for the wealthy to EXPIRE. Time to let the war expire and time to demand that Haliburton and Exxon pay for it.
