    Default Unfortunate internet trends

    Hi there, been a while...
I often notice lately that when a page takes a long time to load there's often a little message at the bottom of the page that says something along the lines of "waiting for adbrite.com" or something similar. My take on that is that if you're going to insinuate your stupid middle-man self into my browsing, get the f'ing server capacity to not slow down my experience.

And when just trying to use my email, even with Firefox's popup blockers, if my cursor happens to touch the banner ad at the top I'll suddenly have to wait for some annoying Ford Explorer ad to retreat back into wherever it came from. I swear, most advertising has the opposite effect on me...if your ad annoys me often enough, I'll go out of my way to buy from the competition. (I'm talking to you, little peel-down ad in the upper right corner of this page. I see that damn thing on more and more sites now...gotta love advertising trends.)

To me, brand awareness advertising is the most effective when it is discreet and stays the hell out of my way until I decide to click on it. Dancing robots and animating stomping bulls glaring at me just arouse my contempt for whatever the fuck they are trying to sell.

I have read an article recently that suggests that the wave of the future for music downloads is that they just build the cost of the music into the iPod or the Comcast bill and share the revenue. Do you realize that with just a little 8 gig Nano that holds 2000 songs, that comes to two grand to fill it up with legal music at 99 cents a pop? Much less an 80 gig model...that'd be what, $20,000? Get real.

    Which brings me to porn:
I have paid $30 for some of the Transsexual Heartbreakers and similar videos...then discovered that renting was often more cost effective...and now will often make do with the free streaming sites. Owning something is rarely worth it to me, and often there are very few scenes that I want to see repeatedly. Just like more people will buy a cd or download an album if the price is fair, I think I'd be more inclined to pay for DVDs again if the price wasn't $30-60. You porn producers may detest my type of customer - but I'm being honest when I say that I've thrown down a few thousand dollars for porn over the years and will gladly continue supporting your efforts if you can find a way to reach me that seems fair...and isn't just based on what you'd like to make. I understand that you have expenses and margins. But what about my desire to avoid the porn that doesn't interest me? To me it's all about the talent and which performers float my boat. On most any given DVD, for every Fabianes or Mary Annes there are three or four generic Brazilian chicks with slight variations in looks, and many of them have acne scars or have all the enthusiasm of Cheney at an Obama rally. Just like I may want to hear the electronic remix of Rhianna's 'Umbrella' and skip the original, I just want the performers I want.

Maybe this type of thing is already available as a la carte downloads and I just don't know. Feel free to educate me, I'm all ears.

I have a Creative Zen Vision M, and I'm a member of Napster to Go. Basically I rent the songs for $14.95/month; I connect my player once a month and keep the songs. If I end my subscription, I lose the unpurchased songs. Not that I don't mind; I could still buy my favorites at 99 cents a pop.

As for DVDs (any genre), I buy only those that I know I'll be watching over and over again. The others I rent as well.

I believe there are sites where you can by DVDs by scene. For a lot of porn, there is one good scene coupled with four so-so ones.

No Script and AdBlock are your friends on some sites.

William Escalade is no more. He's done his service to the site.
