As for the proof - here it is. According the San Deigo Transgender Needs Assessment of 2004 approximately 30-50% of all transsexual females work in the sex industry. A study was done in Houston about 12 years ago (most recent data) and found up to 70% of local urban TS's were in sex work. The rate in a report I read once in SF was about the same.

In general younger transsexual girls have a higher percentage of numbers in the sex trade, along with higher rates of HIV, drug use, murder and sucide. Why? Lack of family and social support, lack of job skills and education leading to no chance of a decent job, or even ANY job. Older transwomen who transition later in life usually have job skills of some sort, are less likely to escort for obvious reasons, and often have alternate income sources, disability, retirement, investments, etc.
