Yes, Seanchi is right. The majority of porn videos, TS or otherwise don't make any money. Some make a little, a very few make a bundle. And almost all have a very short lifespan.

Personally if I'm asked to perform for someone else, I'm happy to get paid up front. Especially if it's with Jessica. I mean getting paid to have sex with one's lover - what in the world can possibly be better than that. So I really don't care what the amount is - pay us and let's shoot a vid!

And I'm no sex pot, but I understand the photography/media business, so I know a couple of times Jessica and I have been hired simply because we are easy to work with, we show up on time, sober, with our hair brushed. We are HAPPY to do as we are asked too the best of our ability, and we don't have unrealistic expectations that we should be entitled to a million bucks just because we are "porn stars."

My best advice to anyone wanting to be in porn. Guy or girl. Be nice and fun to work with. Don't be a prima donna. And maybe someone will call you back, and when that happens 20 times or so you can probably ask for a little more money. But until then go and have some fun, you never know what the next day will bring.

From a producer standpoint. We work on basically a zero budget. In my films, nobody gets anything up front, but everyone gets a share of the net. If the video tanks, well at least we had a little fun. If it does well, everyone makes money.

I personally LOVE roylaties. I still get about a thousand a year from photos I shot as a photojournlalist in the 1990's that are still out with agencies. It trickles in $20 or $50 at a time, but it adds up and a few months ago I got a check for $600 for a photo I shot of a flood in 1993 that was used in a textbook.

I always remember "Linda Lovelace" who was paid something like $1,250.00 for "Deep Throat" which went on to gross over 100 million. Actually as I recall her BF/pimp got the money. Talk about getting fucked...

With adult video a production house plays the numbers game, some vids lose money, some break even and occasionally they get a hit. But THEY are the ones taking the risk, and doing most of the work. And yes, they are going to be the one's making most of the profit. That's just the way it is.

If you don't like it, do like Jessica and I did and buy a room full of computers (I think we have 8 ) spend 5 grand for a HDTV camera another grand for lights, a few terrabytes of back up hard drives, about 5 grand worth of software, a high speed disc copier, shrink wrap packaging equipment, etc and start your own house.

Oh yeah, don't forget - the distributor gets 40% of the retail, your LAWYER, rent, web hosting, accounting, and TAXES will eat up the rest. Yeah, don't forget that little headache, there's no hiding video income, it's all credit card.

Suddenly $300 or a grand for a couple of hours of hot sex ain't so bad is it?

Really? Now that's very interesting. I admit that girl-on-guy strap-on videos are something I actively enjoy watching. I've seen more and more titles on the market lately too. And it appears that there is a good variety of guys in them. Not the same 2 or 3 or whatever.

Do you think it is becoming more "common" and that there are more and more "willing" guys to do it than there were in the past?

This entire thread is a good reality check. I always assumed that the top Trans paysites were raking it in because their videos were shot with expensive equipment and posted on slick websites.

Is a subscription paysite more profitable than producing DVDs?

    Most are if done right.

A Buddy Wood DVD might cost in the region of $17k to make including performers, locations, etc and duplication. That is with our in-house editors, graphic artists and DVD authors - add another $3000-$5000 if you don't have them in house.

We sell online DVD's for about $30 and get most of that amount.
We wholesale through a distributor for between $12-$18 per piece but the disributor takes 30% usually.

We have to pay advertising costs and such.

So for every 100 we sell online we make about $3000
For every 100 we sell through distribution we make about $1000.
70% of our sales are through distibution.

The DVD's will make their money back but they take many months to do so - although the advent of PPV/VOD is helping. We produce DVD's for as much publicity as anything else. For example, we make practically nothing from DVD rental stores but we're hoping that everyone who sees that DVD on the shelf, then remembers our name or checks out the site - which is why on every title of our DVD's the website name is mentioned.

I thought something like a Joey Silvera Rogue DVD would have sold something in the region of 100,000 items worldwide over it's lifetime. The reality is a fraction of that.

Websites used to be easy to do. They're now incredibly difficult with not only competition but the amount of stolen, free porn that we have to compete with. Many avenues of advertising which used to be free (yahoo/google/etc) is now more difficult or expensive to get a decent listing. The advantage of the websites is the ability to get the product to the consumer and bill them rapidly - and the ease at which a consumer can get the product. Companies like ours try hard to brand the product and create a consumer group who likes the product and wants to continue to purchase from you. This is why all the sites have very personal touches as we have a relationship with each customer.

Ok I'm sorry but you want to pay me to make love to a gorgeous girl? Maybe spend some quality time with her. Tell her a few jokes and offer to take her out for ice cream?

Well from reading the above contributions from those who work in the industry, one would think the business works on a shoestring with small profits and the odd lucky title that sells well.

If that is so, why is the porn industry still so big especially in LA? I read its a multi billion dollar industry nearly as big if not bigger than hollywood.

Is the wool being pulled over our eyes? If there was no money in it, and little profit, why do so many porm companies like Private, have such big shoots in exotic locations, upscale mansions with plenty of fit stunning models. That all dont come cheap or would be possible if what the producers on here are saying. Why not let the cat out of the bag. Isnt the porn trade perfect for money laundering, which is how they can afford those big budget films?

The two times we shot 22 scenes in one day, I think our budget for male performers for the entire day was around $1,000.
