I carry a firearm for self defense and I assure you it is something I don't take lightly. I'm a competitive shooter and practice regularly, and the only time my weapon would leave the holster is if I was in imminent fear of death or bodily harm.

Choosing to carry a firearm is something that requires me to act in public with perfect decorum, and avoid moronic street fights over stupid reasons. I have nothing to prove by getting into conflicts with street trash, I'm carrying a lethal instrument that's perfectly capable of taking their life, what do I have to prove by getting into a fistfight?

With that said, A firearm is useless with out the proper training and mindset. 90% of staying out of trouble depends on your situational awareness and defensive mindset, if you don't have a proper mindset and respect of your responsibility as a gunowner, then you'd be better off leaving it at home.

the tl;dr of carrying a gun is that you've just got to be willing to let insults and the like slide off your back, and walk away from shit like that. Don't escalate the situation by drawing your weapon, for example if I have to draw my weapon it's because I've already made the decision that my life is in danger and someone is about to get shot .5 of a second later.

this whole thing happened because the police failed to do there job, TO PROTECT AND SERVE. They ignored everything that happened before hand because it was just 2 TS's. If it were 2 GG there would have been a better investigation of the previous assaults and most likely someone would have been arrested. If you were in Sylvia's shoes would you have just let this girl keep trying to kill you? I think not, it shouldn't have been murder, I think it was manslaughter at the most.
