I don't think the republicans have a clue what they want. When they did capture the majority control, they didn't know what to do. All they did for the twelve years they were in power was whine about how the liberals & democrats were screwing everything up, just like they did before they gained power.

Do they want to lose? Probably. They don't know how to be the majority party.

and why would they want to inherit this present
mess? easier to let the Dems have it, then for
4 or 8 years they can complain about how the Dems
are messing things up (regardless that it was the
GOP who created the mess) and come in like white
knights with ridiculous promises of prosperity and
toughness on immigrants and crime all the while
taking us even deeper into police statism.

if you are a nut and believe in end of world crap
then 2012 seems to be a popular date. this would
give the Dems 4 years in power and just at the
turnaround the GOP get to summon Jesus back for
that whole quickening etc. etc. stuff.

It seems to me they want to dismantle almost all of the democratic programs of the last century and they definitely want to block the development of any new programs. They privatized the power, they privatized communications, they privatized hospitals (which were almost all not-for-profit organizations before Regan), they broke unions, they’re doing everything within their means to break social security, and they’re privatizing all aspects of the military. They’ve got an agenda alright, maintain the rights of corporations against individual citizens and make things as easy as possible for the rich and powerful to maintain their hegemonies.

    mess?
    Inherit? It's their mess.

They controlled Congress for 12 years straight. They've only been out of power for 10 months.

They've controlled the Whitehouse for the last 6 years & 10 months, & 19 years of the last 27 going back to Reagan. 35 of the last 61 since the Japanese surrender

7 of the 9 Justices on the Supreme Court are republican appointees, & Justice Ginsberg is talking retirement (although she'll probably wait till after the next President takes office). Republican appointees have been the majority on the SCOTUS for over 50 years. (The 9th circuit too, but I'm not sure of the actual breakdown.)

    Oh & Trish,
It was actually Jimmy Carter who deregulated energy, transportation, & communications. Over the objections of the republicans I might add, who then deregulated banking & stock trading. It's all about priorities I guess.

some would call that mix of capitalism controlling
    gov't fascism.
Yes, Corporate control of government is the classic definition of fascism, albeit a tad simplistic. I have a little different take.

First: We are corporate America. Everybody with a pension plan, a 401K, an IRA, a mutual fund account, or even a passbook savings or credit union account is part of it. Before anybody gets worked up over Corporations, they need to look in the mirror & ask themselves what they would do if they ever hit the lottery.

Second: We're all socialists. Forget Marx. He was a crackpot, just like everybody else who thinks they can preplan macro-economics. Socialism is just people pooling resources to do the things that can't get done on an individual basis. Capitalism is just privatized socialism with a narrow scope. It's not really a "system".

The free market is everywhere. Even in North Korea. People have always traded among each other. That's what makes the world go round.
