Most of the age of consent laws are totally random and arbitrary, the principle behind them is sound- but the application never seems to be. You can vote and serve in the military YEARS before you can drink alcohol in the United States. And there really is no reason to have it legal to get married at 12 for girls, and 14 for boys in the same state... either 12 is "too young" to consent to marriage, or it isn't. Gender has nothing to do with it.
