    Default The Transgender Project

    The Transgender Project

    What is The Transgender Project?

The National Development and Research Institutes has received a grant
from the National Institutes of Health to begin and EXTENSIVE and IN
DEPTH, 5 year study of the TRANSGENDER community in the greater NYC
metro area. We believe this is the most thorough study of our
    community to date.

Qualified participants will be asked numerous questions about their
past lives—–childhood, early and late teen years, and present day
lives. Questions about your family, school, friends, co-workers, and
social situations will be asked of each participant. How we perceive
ourselves, how we think others see us; acceptance and support-or the
lack of; sexual relationships, and activities—–these issues will all
    be addressed.

In a very real sense, you'll be telling your life story.

    Who Qualifies as a Participant?

    · Male to Female Transgendered Persons or anyone who was born male
but does not identify as male full-time—TV's, CD's, (24/7 or Part
Time), Pre-, Post-, or Non-Op TS, TG, gender variant, gender non-
    conforming, etc.

    · You must reside in the greater NYC Metro area.

    · You must be 19 years of age or older.

    · Hetero, Bi, Gay, or however you may classify yourself.

    · Qualified participants must be willing to make a 3 year commitment
    to the project.

    · You must be willing to be screened for STD's-HIV.

    What's in it for me?

    · Qualified participants are eligible for modest financial
remuneration. $30 for initial interview and blood anaysis,
    $10 for follow up visit.

    · As a participant, you will receive free blood and urine analysis
for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

    · Should you need it, NDRI/The Transgender Project will
arrange medical treatment for you—in almost all cases, FREE OF CHARGE.

    · You will become a very important part of the MOST
COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF OUR COMMUNITIES ON THE EAST COAST TO DATE.

YOU CAN EXPECT AND WILL RECEIVE ONLY THE MOST CONFIDENTIAL TREATMENT OF YOUR INFORMATION

THE MORE WE LEARN ABOUT OURSELVES,
THE MORE WE CAN TEACH OTHERS

ok, girls, i know this is like a boring thing, participating in some study, but hey, you get $30 for the first interview. Enough for a few drinks and Starlight is practically across the street. Then you get $10 for getting your blood tests back. That's free STD testing. Then if you are chosen to be part of the long term study (which I was) you get another $30 every time you get interviewed. It's not much but hey, you arrange your interview for a convenient time and it pays for dinner.

I'm surprised that this didn't get just a little bit of a response in all the time it was up (I just noticed the first post date) from the girls, even as a Q & A about the project.

Is there any news as to the response, at large (Not just via HA)?

All things considered, even $30/dinner isn't much to break down walls of distrust that the world as a whole can build for some of the women here.

Have the study people done a little legwork/outreach to that effect?

I wound up in the middle of a gender study back in the mid to late 80's where the students went out and did in-your-face interviews over a few beers at the local pub. Crass and mildly unprofessional, but they got people to talk to them. Come to think of it, the beers ended up running about $30.

From my understanding they have about half the
number of people they are hoping for. They are
at about 250 and are still looking for about that #.

I'm not personally involved but I thought they were
going to Allanah's parties as well as Escualita and
The Silver Swan trying to drum up participants.

For me, I go to the east village (my usual hangout
in Manhattan) sit for an hour and get paid $30 which
    covers dinner/drinks for the evening.

    Thanx for the update.

I'm not personally involved but I thought they were
going to Allanah's parties as well as Escualita and
The Silver Swan trying to drum up participants.
    Definitely a place to start.

I have/had an intersexed friend/lover that was the subject of a lot of medical curiosity for many years. He'd be considered pure gold for some gender researchers, but has some pretty hardline views against the medical/research community as a whole because they always treated him as a study animal rather than a human being. He once told me that there were things he said and revealed to me that would turn his blood cold if he'd been saying them to a researcher (Even though, in the big scheme of things, they were just basic facts about his gender identity and sexual feelings).

For me, I go to the east village (my usual hangout
in Manhattan) sit for an hour and get paid $30 which
    covers dinner/drinks for the evening.
What a great scam. I should be so interesting.

They generally have a few people there everyweek. Several organizations are usually at the parties distributing info, condoms and other items.
