Are comics a form of art?

I saw a topic about the fantastic four movie and after seeing no one called the posters nerds I'm going to go out on a limb and assume I won't look like one for posting this.

Are comics a form of art?
Look at length at some of T. Ott's work (a dutch artist who produces silent noir comics) and you'll see stories that look as though they should be bound in fine leather and art that could hang in a museum, but paired together, they seem to illicit a general "eww" reaction from most people. Comics still carry a stigma of being low grade trashy entertainment. But with writers like alan moore (From Hell, The Watchmen) and daniel clowes ( Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron, 8-Ball) as a writier and artist, it seems as though comics have come into their own. Hit movies such as Road To Perdition and Ghost World are based upon their comic counterparts. But many people are apprehensive to accept them as so. This is understandable as there are still a lot of irrelevant drivel coming from the comic world. But is any other form of art so different?
What is your opinion?

These paintings were studies
just an exercise in sadism.
nothing really sexual about it for me.

Art or not, depends on the story. All the old stuff like Batman, Supeman, The F4, Spiderman etc. was more propaganda back then. It´s just the superhero stuff for sick kids like I was lol. If you want to check serious comics, then try Enki Bilal. It´s mostly Science-Fiction Politthriller stuff.
