UPDATE ON MIRIAM RIVERA
Sorry, I don't have an update, I'm asking for one. If this was a hate crime of any kind it really needs to be publicized. There are gay and trans-friendly blogs who would like to write about it.
It really bothers me that Miriam's attack is not being publicized, because I used to have a transsexual friend named Gabrielle Picket. Gabrielle's twin sister, also a transsexual, Chanel Pickett, was murdered in Boston by someone who picked her up in a bar, presumably while Chanel was escorting.
The killer was tried and ACQUITTED of murder because of the transsexual panick defense -- that is, his lawyer convinved the jury that a man who discovers his date is a transsexual rather than a GG, is justified in flying into a violent rage, even though he had dated other transsexual escorts and frequented a transsexual bar. He was convicted of assault instead.
Gabrielle was a charming, intelligent but very depressed person when I knew her. I lost touch with her, but Megabody informed me on these boards that she eventually died of a drug overdose.

that is a truely sad story to hear.
unfortunately the guys around here may not be so supportive as many chimed in the "hate crime veto" was right and that there shouldnt be any "special" laws protecting trans-women

If you do not mind discussing this case further with me, please send me a message.
It is truly awful that different standards seems to apply to different people and genders. Hopefully in time this will change.
If drugs were involved with the attack on Mariam, as far as I am concerned, that is an irrelevant issue. It does not justify what happened, any way you look at it.

i dont think anyone was implying that it changed the situation if drugs were involved as much as it was setting the scene for a problem
