bangkok is a super city in terms of being a metropolis and shopping and sex and stuff u can do in a regular megalopolis ... but all in all places like phuket (which i have not been to), Hua Hin and the other out-of-the-way areas and near some great natural settings are a lot better...

however i have never been in a country which is one of the biggest tourism hubs in the world yet cannot solve its English literacy problems....(count china out since more people flock to Thailand than China i think)

Phuket seems to have the nicest beaches of anywhere ive seen...couple with an active shopping district and whatever else you might want to see...

I think its got Bangkok beat...Plus BBK is a tourist trap..
