The point was that the Kurds happiness is largely irrelevant to the overall policy in Iraq and its legacy in american foreign policy.

I think the US is afraid if the Kurds gains their independence that Turkey will feel Kurdistan would be ripe for the taking in order to start rebuilding its Ottoman empire. Which I guess is not such a bad thing since I just paid $800 for two ottomans. Maybe the price would come down?
