Gil Scott Heron rules. Great choice.
I would definitely add Gil to my list. The Last Poets, Eugene McDaniels, Love, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and '60s Dylan are most cool too.

And I'll have to check out Joey Jordison.

My favorite musician by far is Miles Davis, because he was a pioneer, never standing still.
He constantly listened to other styles of music and changed his own approach. I have close to 50 of his albums on vinyl. I am a keyboard player, and my favorite living player is Herbie Hancock. He played with Miles and covers several styles, himself.

Favorite band of all time; Earth Wind & Fire.

Besides Jazz, I love all styles of music, but get bored if everything sounds the same. Current Drum & Bass is my favorite style. I also like Brazilian, Indian, middle Eastern styles.

By the way, singers are musicians too, even though many of them feel like they are better than musicians.
