While OF is the biggest name, there are already a bunch of competitors that have the exact same model. My guess is that folks using OF to host content will just move to other platforms for the foreseeable future. That said, it doesn't seem like government authorities, payment processors, NGOs who fight human trafficking/child exploitation will relent anytime soon. So the writing may be on the wall. I imagine the administrative side of ethically running a porn production company--maintaining records showing all performers are of-age, were tested for STIs, provided consent to be filmed, etc.--is a huge job. I'm guessing the average OF content creator does any of that stuff. It'd be interesting to hear Grooby Steven's take on this development.

It seems the decision to ban porn was in response to pressure from their payment processors, possibly worried about their own potential legal exposure. I presume that other companies in the same field will eventually come under the same pressure.

Once again we are looking at a whole section of the sex industry possibly being shut down because of concerns about underage sex. It should be possible to come up with more targeted solutions, but is anyone in authority motivated to do this? Hardly anyone on either side of politics wants to be seen to be publicly defending the sex industry, even though many of them would be using its services.

I have a different opinion/point of view. Why didn't OF (and why wouldn't any other platform that comes after them) make detection, removal and cooperation with authorities when it comes to underage sex acts/illegal trafficking and exploitation as their PRIORITY #1??

There are quite a few technologies that exist out of the box today that could help here with minimal administrative burden. Age detection from video/photo is trivial for machines, and any suspected material should be flagged for review right away. Sentiment detection (i.e., is performer under duress?), anomaly identification between location of broadcast and identification information submitted is also easy. Flagging potential "sex content farms" based on identical locations of broadcasters and tracking those over time for violations could be another way to prevent and/or stop illegal activities. And, of course, there are many manual controls that could be put in place to assuage even the toughest scrutiny.

I love sex (obviously) and I don't want to see a blanket ban on all content. But the industry certainly needs to evolve to address the concerns repeatedly raised front and center instead of treating them as after thoughts.

Many civilised countries have made prostitution a legal regulated activity. Unfortunately, moral posturers seem to have more clout in the US political system; I guess because religion is more important.

In any case, the OF ban on porn goes well beyond illegal activity. It looks like the change was forced on them by Mastercard and Visa, who have previously cut off payment services to Pornhub. Whenever a key area of technology is dominated by one or two companies they can have as much power as any government.

Anyone who thinks it will be fine because people can just move to other platforms hasn't been paying attention to what happened earlier with Backpage and the FOSTA/SESTA laws. It started off as a crackdown on illegal activity but the net ended up being cast much more widely.

Perhaps Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies do have a big future after all. They might end up being the only way we can pay for porn.

The sex industry will never disappear because there will always be demand, but forcing it underground means that the people involved are more at risk of abuse and exploitation. If porn is forced off of platforms like OnlyFans it will move to shadier parts of the internet where there are fewer safeguards and people are more likely to get ripped off.
