I think many people, maybe most people, transgendered or not, have splashes of the other gender dribbled onto the canvas of the gender they present to the world. But you are probably reading this furtively, as though to admit an interest in the lives of transsexuals risked you becoming infected with gender dysphoria. If only people could get comfortable with the universality of gender duality, perhaps they wouldn't react so violently when an encounter with a transgender reminds them uncomfortably of it. Maybe then we would not be mourning the murders of Brandon Teena or Gwen Araujo. Violence against the transgendered community has continued at intolerable levels even as transsexuals pervade public consciousness. The Internet has brought awareness but not acceptance of transsexuals.

Though the social position of the transsexual remains precarious, in other respects the internet heralded boon times for trannies and their admirers. Web browsing, electronic payments and email put T Girls in touch with the resources and information that the needed to understand and effect their transition. The internet made it possible for T-girls to make a living to connect with their admirers without freezing, being exposed to street crime, or vulnerable to police persecution and dangerous creeps while streetwalking.
