Goodyear teacher Brittany Zamora was arrested after police said she had sex with a 13-year-old boy, largely because his parents did this one thing.

We now know who to credit for the arrest of a Goodyear teacher who police say repeatedly had sex with one of her sixth-grade students and sent naked pictures of herself to another.

Certainly, not the school, where police say Brittany Zamora performed oral sex on the 13-year-old boy in her classroom.

Credit goes to the boy's parents, who cared enough to check up on him.

PARENTS DID THEIR JOB

The parents installed a cell phone application, Sentry Parental Control, that alerted them when their son’s teacher was sending sexually explicit messages and naked pictures of herself.

Things like: “I want you every day with no time limit."

And, "If I could quit my job and (have sex with) you all day long, I would.”

Welcome to the increasingly complex world of 21st century parenting, where it is not enough simply to be involved in your children’s lives.

THE BEST PARENTS ARE ALSO DIGITAL SPIES

The best parents, it seems, now must also be digital spies. Not because you don’t trust your kids. You do, but come on, they’re kids.

It’s because you don’t trust the creepers who are out there, ready to pounce – and sometimes, as these parents found out, they are closer than you think.

Zamora, 27, was arrested this week after police say she had sex with her 13-year-old student at least three times and performed oral sex on him in her car and in her classroom at Las Brisas Academy Elementary School in Goodyear.

Rather than being shocked, be warned.

ARE YOU WATCHING OUT FOR YOUR KIDS?

In light of the Brittany Zamora story, every parent today ought to be giving themselves a self-evaluation.

You know who your son’s friends are, but do you who he’s talking to online? Do you occasionally check your daughter’s browsing history or see what she's posting to Instagram?

Have you looked into a monitoring system that will allow your kids a modicum of privacy but also a nice big safety net if predators come calling?

IT'S SIMPLE ADVICE: TRUST BUT VERIFY

The very best parents trust, but they also verify.

"There truly are real monsters in the world," the boy's father said on Thursday. "As parents, you teach your kids that there’s no such thing as monsters. At all. There’s none. But in the real world, there are monsters.”

Earlier this week, in response Facebook posts congratulating the 13-year-old for making it with his teacher, I pointed out that the boy was a victim, not a guy on the prowl.

In retrospect, I think that 13-year-old boy got lucky after all. He has good parents.

GOODYEAR TEACHER ARRESTED IN SEXUAL MISCONDUCT WITH 13-YEAR-OLD

A 27-year-old teacher was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sexual misconduct with a minor after Goodyear police say the parents of a 13-year-old male student found text messages indicating sexual activity between the two of them on and off campus.

Brittany Zamora, a teacher at Las Brisas Academy Elementary School in Goodyear, was taken into custody Thursday morning at her home and was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on one count obscene material transmission to a minor, Goodyear police said.

Police said alleged sexual conduct was reported to them on Wednesday night by the school's principal.

Officials with the Liberty Elementary School District, where the school is located, did not return calls seeking comment.

“The safety message here is parents need to be aware of their kids' activities on phones and social media and be aware of who they are in contact with," said Lisa Kutis, a spokeswoman for the Goodyear Police Department.

Police don't know yet whether other students may have been involved, Kutis said.

"That's part of our overall investigation," she said, adding that detectives are continuing to interview people. "We're not ruling that out."

It was not immediately known how long Zamora has worked at the school.

She was certified in 2016 to teach elementary education K-8 in Arizona, according to the Arizona Department of Education's database. She also is certified to teach Structured English Immersion, which is a method of rapidly teaching the language to non-English speakers in school.
