Porn existed before Playboy, during it, and doesn't need airbrushed/photoshopped fantasy to survive it in a crowded market. The best you can say is that what Playboy started others did better. As for Hefner, the simple truth is that he was a pimp who sold his 'bunnies' to men with money, as I am sure the Billionaire Bunny-Bonker in the White House will gleefully confirm. Why else was he so keen to appear in Hefner's crap movies?

I am very much alive and was never impressed by Playboy's plastic pseudo-porn. As for the Sexual Revolution, that, to me was a book published (in German) by Wilhelm Reich in 1936. If you had a genuine interest in the history of sex, from Roman bath-houses to the effeminates (mukhanathun) of Medina in the time of Muhammad, the rampant queers of the Qing dynasty in China, to the Molly Houses of London in the 17th century, to the Lesbian and trans-queer clubs in Paris and Berlin in the 1930s, to the (to me) fabulous transexual whores who plied their trade on the mean streets of Naples, Milan and Paris in the 1970s, you would recognize Hefner for the one-dimensional prick that he was. Hugh gave porn an 'intellectual' gloss that made it okay to be seen buying it and reading it. I think that was his big contribution. People repeated the cliche that they bought Playboy for the articles not the pictures, and indeed Hugh paid very good authors and thinkers to write for his magazine. But in the end, Playboy essentially failed and Hugh became irrelevant when pornography could be downloaded for free on the internet. So much for reading it for the articles. Still, there's something to be said for someone who can get away with living their entire life wearing sexy bedroom attire, that's what I wanna do.
