Everyone concentrates on the technical aspects but photography is an art. Be creative and make your photos interesting. Break the rules. And choose your subjects/models carefully.

For lighting, do anything other than blast everything with soft boxes which is the choice of crank-it-out porn houses. Surrounding colors that compliment the subject's skin tone. Highlight the positive aspects of the subject, and stay away from negative. We all have negatives, delusions to the contrary. And always, always consider the reaction you're trying to invoke when you cull the herd, not how good that particular image is.
