Default Re: Not Guitar, Mr President, but Qatar!

We present the highs and lows of contemporary politics: spend your way into a crisis by backing the wrong people, buy your way out of it by paying the right ones....

The government of Qatar bought a $6.5m apartment in one of Donald Trump’s New York towers soon after the dismissal of a lawsuit that tried to stop the president benefiting from such deals.

Qatar’s mission to the United Nations signed a deal for the condominium at Trump World Tower on 17 January, according to city records. The purchase means that the Middle Eastern state now owns four units in the building, for which it paid $16.5m.

On 21 December, a federal judge in New York had thrown out a lawsuit from ethics campaigners alleging that Trump was breaching the emoluments clause of the US constitution by collecting tens of thousands of dollars in charges from Qatar each year for the three apartments it already owned in the building.

Qatar’s new acquisition at Trump World Tower, which is in Manhattan’s Midtown East section, coincided with an intense lobbying campaign in Washington by the Qatari government amid a regional crisis that has pitted the Gulf monarchy against Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Nevermind, it's OK now, nothing to see here, move along.......
The inside of Trump's head must look like a wet painting from Picasso's SLEAZE PERIOD,
The most powerful man in the world waiting to see what the full wrath of the FBI looks like. Consciousness of Guilt.

It now emerges that this whole pantomime may in fact reveal just how mired in bribery and corruption the government of the USA has become as it is used to enrich the President and his family -

Last year the administration, bizarrely, backed a Saudi blockade of Qatar, a Middle Eastern nation that also happens to be the site of a major U.S. military base. Why? Well, the move came shortly after the Qataris refused to invest $500 million in 666 Fifth Avenue, a troubled property owned by the family of Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law.
And now it looks as if Qatar may be about to make a deal on 666 Fifth Avenue after all. I wonder why?

Add Qatar to the ZTE volte-face in China -as Krugman argues the deal is for the Chinese to invest in one of the President's businesses in Indonesia - and you have this:

Step back from the details and consider the general picture. High officials have the power to reward or punish both businesses and other governments, so that undue influence is always a problem, even if it takes the form of campaign contributions or indirect financial rewards via the revolving door.

But the problem becomes vastly worse if interested parties can simply funnel money to officials through their business holdings — and Trump and his family, by failing to divest from their international business dealings, have basically hung a sign out declaring themselves open to bribery (and also set the standard for the rest of the administration).
