Ensuring that women aren't being exploited in the sex industry is essential, but again, Carlin's mantra comes to mind.

I can't comment on what's going on there, because I don't know what's going on there...because I'm not there. I don't know if they're trying to gain money from the sex industry using arrests (like a tariff) or if they are trying to clean up the street end of it....or just trying to make it look like they're cleaning it up.
I believe trying to keep an active sex industry going is probably somewhat of a juggling act. It brings your homeland revenue in the way of tourism and puts money in people's pockets...but you don't want the crime that often comes with it: petty theft, drugs, exploitation and sometimes sex with minors.
I suppose it helps to contain it to a clearly delineated area to keep tabs on....
There's also a reality of folks being happy to be sex tourists, but God forbid it takes place in their own back yards where their families live.
I always thought that online prostitution would help make everyone happy, but the reality is that it's never cheap enough for some people.
I'm not judging people's morals...I've hired and dated escorts...and certainly have partaken of street prostitutes.
and I would certainly have visited the ladies of Thailand if I could take the long flight.
But I've never judged people for trying to change an area into something different. I just move on.

...but somehow that's all moot, because I doubt that's what's actually going on...:)

:bangheadOh , George Carin , ok.:iagree: Yes , or the one from George about ," It's legal to watch killing and murder , but not making love" RIP , George.
But I have spent enough time in Thailand over the last 16 years to know not to worry about any shutting own of the sex industry .
After all the incident you are referring to involves a thief. And the Thai cops are doing a great job of keeping the strip safe for us punters , and their payoffs ,lol.

Fucks sake, the only way to get rid of crime is to decriminalize sex work so the girls have the same legal protections as other workers - stuff like labor laws. We have low crime in NSW because we have good laws that let the girls choose how they work, and NZ has even better ones and low sex work related crime there too. Thai girls (and by girls I mean ladyboys) have told me it's a ok situation but they have to pay the cops to leave them alone, you might say stealing sex worker money is a routine crime done by the law enforcement in most countries...

Interesting and true observations .
In Thailand , although sex work is technically NOT 'legal' as the gurl told you , it is accepted and a " ok situation ". As far as having to pay the cops EVERYONE has to pay the cops and government officials to grease the wheels and get business done , the girls , the bar owners , street vendors and at all levels of society , but it is not too onerous and it is an accepted situation.
The key difference ,IMHO, it that everything works kind of smoothly in Thailand as opposed to other Asian nations such as India and The Philippines , where everything is so bogged down by corruption that nothing works .
Indeed , Thailand is regarded as one of the SE Asian powerhouses and has lead SE Asia out if the economic recession of 1997 . As my shrinking Baht to Dollar exchange rate sadly proves .1020679
