A rich soul voice whose classic song When a Man Loves a Woman echoes down through the years. The sad thing is that Percy never made as much money from the song as he could have, because he signed away the copywright when he recorded it, much as the ownership of Lennon and McCartney songs was sold by Brian Epstein to Dick James Music Ltd in the 1960s before the Beatles had gone extra-terrestrial. This is not really my area of interest these days, but I feel that Soul, with a capital S has lapsed as a genre much as Tamla Motown has slipped into history. You need only compare, if you dare, James Brown with Prince, most of whose music is a re-dub of Brown -but without the soul. The decline began with the truly horrible sound made by Michael Jackson from the age of 10 or however old he was when he started shrieking into a microphone, 'singing' from the throat, where a classic Soul singer like Percy Sledge sang from -the soul, the heart. You can hear it and feel it.
