MEXICO CITY (MarketWatch) -- Mexican conservative Felipe Calderon said Monday he is confident the partial recount of votes from the July 2 presidential election will lead the Federal Electoral Tribunal to confirm his victory over leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
The Federal Electoral Tribunal, which is responsible for ruling on challenges to the July 2 election, with validating the process and declaring a president-elect, conducted a recount last week of votes from about 9% of the country's nearly 130,500 polling stations.
Although the court has yet to announce its findings, the recount isn't expected to change the outcome of the election, in which Calderon obtained 244,000 votes more than Lopez Obrador out of nearly 42 million votes cast.
At a press conference Monday, Calderon of the ruling National Action Party, said the results of the recount, "in essence corroborate the count carried out by the people on July 2."
