The right-wing chickenhawk crazies continue to carry on the Nixon legacy...when in trouble, no dirty trick is out of bounds....but maybe shrubya should make sure that Jesus isn't looking...or maybe shrubya thinks Nixon and Jesus (not to mention Rove) are one in the same...

Blood In The Water: Swiftboating NeoNuts To Launch Attack On John Murtha Tomorrow
James Boyce 08/02/2006

Tomorrow at 11:00 am in Johnstown, Pennslyvannia, there will be a press conference outside of John Murtha's campaign headquarters where a recently-formed group called Veterans For Truth will announce a major veteran's rally to be held in October in an attempt to stop John Murtha from getting re-elected.

I first found out about this late on Monday when Max Cleland left me a voicemail message - the summary of Max's message: same people, same tactic, same strategy, same donors, different candidate.

Sadly, Max is right.

The news that John Murtha is being actively swift-boated should come as no surprise. At The Patriot Project, we know full well that this has not a question of if, but when. In fact, on July 10th, Taylor Marsh wrote a terrific piece which was also posted here. In it, she details how John Murtha was universally regarded as one of Congress's top supporters of the troops until he suggested, after great thought and soul searching, that perhaps it was time for them to get out of Iraq. Her words are right on after this weeks events and well worth a quick review.

Who are the so-called Veterans For Truth? They're led by a man named Larry Bailey who created the www.kerrylied.com site during the 2004 Presidential Campaign. Mr. Bailey is a veteran but he never served with either John Kerry or John Murtha.

bootmurtha.com is a site that is run by Veterans For Truth - the website is managed by the same woman who also created murthalied.com. This site is no longer active.

According to their own site, Veterans For Truth operates under a group called the Iowa Presidential Watch, a Federal Political Action Committee operating out of a mailbox in Iowa. A quick visit to its website shows its advisory board is headed by one Richard Schwarm. Mr Schwarm, in his bio on the IPW site, claims to be a good friend of Karl Rove's. Which in itself is not a crime, but perhaps should be. A deeper dive into Iowa Presidential Watch via Campaign Money reveals that at the end of the last filing period, they had a grand total of $7 in the bank. Seven dollars. Hmm.

This means one of two things. This group is either bluffing or there will be significant amounts of money poured into this group over the next thirty to sixty days which will not be reported till after the election, diminishing the political fallout. Will Bob Perry, another good friend of Karl Rove's, contribute more than $4,000,000 like he did to the Swift Boat Veterans when they attacked another decorated veteran in John Kerry? We'll have to wait and see.

There's one more important part of the story. Their press conference is tomorrow at 11:00 but at 10:30, we're going to fire the first shot by exposing this whole charade for what it really is: a swift-boating neo-conservative attack on a decorated vetearn who exercised his right to free speech and disagreed with the administration's "stay the course" mentality.

Actually what John Murtha said about Karl Rove and the administration's policy deserves to be quoted directly.

"He's sitting in his air-conditioned office on his big, fat backside-saying stay the course. That's not a plan! We've got to change direction. You can't sit there in the air-conditioned office and tell troops carrying seventy pounds on their backs, inside these armored vessels-hit with IED's every day-seeing their friends blown up-their buddies blown up-and he says stay the course? Easy to say that from Washington, DC."

The lesson the right wing wants to teach us is that if you stand up and disagree, if you voice your opinion, no matter how valid it may be, you will be attacked.

The lesson we're going to teach the right wing is, we've had enough and anyone you attack, will be defended. At 10:30 tomorrow, Mike Lyon, Executive Director of The Patriot Project, has organized a press conference where Max Cleland, VETPAC and others will be defending John Murtha. An eye for an eye you say? Damm right. I will post more about that event, and the following 11:00 event tomorrow.

Last point. The big veterans rally in October? Guess who the keynote speaker is reported to be? John O'Neill. That's right, the man who has made a career of out never having served with John Kerry is stepping to the plate, or perhaps I should say the trough, again. Same people, same tactic, same strategy, same donors, different candidate.

John O'Neill's presence tells me something else about the Veterans For Truth. They are definitely planning on getting some major donations in. After all, the last time John O'Neill got involved with a veterans group, the Swift Boaters back in 2004, there was a bill to pay. A $50,000 bill submitted by Mr. O'Neill that is.
